Hi I had a thyroidectomy 2 years ago. I have been researching weight gain after the surgery. I am finding that people who have had this procedure done are finding it difficult to lose weight even with exercise. I am trying to lose weight as well. I can’t find one person that lost weight after the procedure. My question is are you finding it difficult to lose weight since your thyroid surgery?

  3. gkygrl Says:

Hi Nfide: Yes, losing weight has been difficult but I have not quite gotten my TSH to the normal range yet (but I think it is getting there). I know I have other medications in my pill box that can cause weight gain (Lupron, Norenthindrone/Progestin, Lyrica). This makes the picture a little more difficult to assess.
I am beginning to feel better and less puffy — for me that counts for something. Don’t give up.

I’m also on 100mg Provigil for my MS. I completely agree it has restored my ability to get going.

  5. Cacamamy18 Says:

Love your videos! I commented on your post surgery video about my thyroid cancer/surgery/radiation fun.

Weight gain is to be expected when your thyroid is removed, radiated, or just not functioning properly. It affects your metabolism in a negative way, along with your hormones. Stress and anxiety come with the mood swings, and we know that stress can also cause weight gain via cortisol.

I lost weight by combining cardio/weights along with trying to eat smaller portions of healthier foods

  6. Cacamamy18 Says:

Still, my weight fluctuates. I lost 50 lbs, gained back 20 lbs. I really try to relieve my stress and anxiety, but it’s tough. I take care of my mother who is a paraplygic due to a car accident the same year I was diagnosed with cancer. She has many health problems not related to this, but eventually the stress creeps up on you.

Do your research, talk to your doctors, get an Endocrinologist, and learn to use humor as your personal medicine. Best of luck my fellow thyroid friends :)

  7. gkygrl Says:

I am on 150 synthroid now because my TSH is still at 10 (I thought it was better than that). Little by little.

Thanks for the helpful comments — very much appreciated! I know it takes time to get back on track with the thyroid–but I will take the journey and try to be patient.

I have a great endo doc who is a real gem and on the cutting edge of research. I really value him.

  8. BretagneShrew Says:

I am going on modafinil (provigil) soon :) can’t wait! Lexapro really did nothing for me, heard good things about modafinil though. I have major fatigue issues and for two years was taking duramine (appetite suppressant) which is really not good for you. I have alpha-wave sleep disorder too, sux big time.

  9. zivaray Says:

at 43, you are so beautiful.

  10. gkygrl Says:

That is such a kind comment, thank you very much zivaray.

  11. zivaray Says:

I started lexapro 5 days ago. It’s a strange thing but I think it’s really starting to work. Although, the side effects are sometimes unnerving. Not as sexual, drowsiness…guess nothing’s perfect.

  12. WildCherry7777 Says:

has the provigil help you lose weight?

  13. gkygrl Says:

No, not really — it isn’t an amphetamine or anything like that. It does help with staying awake which could give you energy to exercise and perhaps lose weight that way — on it’s own. I don’t think so.

  14. gkygrl Says:

That drowsiness should subside a bit. The sexual side-effects …. yup, pretty common.

  15. cwj06001 Says:

provigil won’t help in weight lose

  16. WildCherry7777 Says:

I know thats why I take adderall now

  17. addstudent Says:

Hey, thanks for the info about provigil. As part of my attention deficit, I seem to get super tired all the time – been like that for my whole life. I’m really interested in hopefully starting this medication, as I’m tired of being fatigued all the time. Here’s hoping it works for me as well as it does for you!

  18. islamrapesthemind Says:

sounds like u need a good pipe cleaning.

  19. islamrapesthemind Says:

  20. chessdude67 Says:

God bless you for sharing. Also, God bless the Red Sox!

    peace.

  21. savingbeauty Says:

Thank you, dear one. Just a footnote. Whatever you feel is best. It’s an anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant, etc. (eventually addictive and can increase appetites at night). Indeed, it tends to prolong sleep. Though we need these “vacations” we sadly have to work on long term alternatives as they weaken and can cause us harm internally. The BIG one is LDN, a near cure for the incurable. No toxic or side effects of any note, at about a dollar a day. Haven’t had an MS attack in 5 years.
